Why is the Foundations of Movement Programme important for young aspiring athletes?

Research has indicated that resistance training significantly improves muscular strength, power production, running speed and general motor performance in youth sport (Rhodri & Lloyd, 2012).

From a health perspective, evidence suggests that regular participation in the foundational movement patterns will increase bone mineral density and reduce sport related injuries in young athletes (Faigenbaum, 2011).

In addition, creating robust movement patterns at an early age has been associated with positive psychological health and wellbeing in children and adolescents (Rhodri & Llyod 2012).

We know that competence builds confidence and the Foundation of Movement programme has improved children's confidence in over 95% of athletes over the last year. This competence will create life long movers that have a positive relationship with physical activity; the ultimate goal of any youth development programme.

How does it work?

The Programme is split into 5 lessons which cover the Foundations of Movement. Each lesson has a movement challenge followed by a brief description of why the movement is important to Sport. Each lesson has the most up to date movement progresssions so that individuals can learn at their own pace. Apply your learning straight away by pausing and having a go at the exercises!

Once you have covered the content use the "Foundations of Movement Programme" document and youtube video to follow the exercise programme. Marcus guides your child along personally every step of the way!

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I need?

The programme is designed around what you may already have at home. All you need is a small amount of space, some hardback books, a bag, a pillow, a washing basket, a cricket bat or other straight implement like a broom stick handle and a skipping rope.

How long will it take?

Each lesson is 30-45 minutes long. The content should take 3 -5 weeks to cover. Once you have completed the content the programme will take 25 minutes to complete. This programme can then be completed as many times as you wish.

There is a conditioning element at the end of each session which you could miss if you were getting your physical activity elsewhere in the week. For example if you had hockey training it may be worth just doing the technical work.
